This half-kilometer stretch of oceanfront lawn is Colombo's most beloved public space. Originally created by the British in 1859, Galle Face Green serves as the city's social hub where families gather, children play, and visitors enjoy spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean.

Standing at 356 meters tall, Lotus Tower is the tallest building in Sri Lanka and all of South Asia. This massive structure opened in 2019 and gets its name from its lotus flower design. You can see it from almost anywhere in Colombo because it towers over everything else in the city.
The tower has several observation decks where you can go up and see the entire city spread out below you. On a clear day, you can see the ocean, Port City, and all the way across Colombo. There's also a revolving restaurant at the top where you can eat while the floor slowly turns, giving you views in all directions. The tower lights up at night in different colors, making it a beautiful landmark to see from anywhere in the city.

Colombo Race Course has been an important landmark since 1893, when it officially opened for horse racing after being moved from Galle Face Green. This large open ground sits right in the middle of the city, offering a peaceful green space in the heart of the capital. The racecourse hosted exciting horse races for over 60 years until gambling was banned in 1956.
Today, the historic grounds serve as a major sports venue, hosting rugby and football matches. The area is also popular for morning walks, evening strolls, and public gatherings. The Race Course includes beautiful colonial buildings and is close to Independence Square and national museum.
Did you know?
During World War II, the Race Course was transformed into a military airfield. The Royal Air Force and Royal Navy operated squadrons here, and during the Easter Sunday Raid by Japanese bombers in 1942, the aircraft based here successfully defended Colombo. After the war, it returned to horse racing until 1956. In 2011, the grounds were redeveloped into Sri Lanka's first international-grade rugby stadium, which also hosts football matches and national celebrations.

The National Museum opened in 1877 and is the largest museum in Sri Lanka. This beautiful white colonial building houses thousands of objects that tell the story of Sri Lanka from ancient times to today. You will see the crown jewels of Kandyan kings, ancient stone carvings, traditional masks, old weapons, and beautiful paintings.
Walking through the museum is like traveling back in time. Each room shows a different period of Sri Lankan history. You can see how people lived hundreds of years ago, what they wore, what tools they used, and how they created art. The museum also has a natural history section with stuffed animals and information about Sri Lanka's wildlife.

The National Museum building itself is a work of art designed by a British architect during colonial times. One of the most precious items inside is the throne and crown of the last King of Kandy, which the British captured in 1815. The museum also contains ancient palm leaf manuscripts that are over 1,000 years old, written in Sinhala and Pali languages, containing Buddhist teachings and historical records.
