World-Famous Stilt Fishermen
Weligama's stilt fishermen are one of the most photographed sights in Sri Lanka. They perch on tall wooden poles driven into the coral reef, using a simple rod and line. The technique is usually traced back to the years just after World War II, when fish was scarce and the reef was crowded, so fishermen started working from poles above the water instead of competing for space in it.
Here is the part most visitors do not expect. Very few fish are actually caught this way anymore. Most of the men you see posing on the poles today are not fishing at all. They climb up for photos, hold the pose for a minute or two, and move on to the next group of tourists once they are paid. Real stilt fishing still happens, but it is rare and usually done at dawn, away from the road, by fishermen who are not interested in an audience.
